"Greater Israel" and the CIA/MOSSAD Neo-Zionists-dominated New World Order of thousands of tribes with flags....

Ultimate goals of "Greater Israel" and the CIA/MOSSAD Neo-Zionists-dominated New World Order of thousands of tribes with flags....

In the closing days of the Bush disaster, Israel is moving to consolidate gains it has made over the past eight years toward its Ultimate goals of "Greater Israel" and the CIA/MOSSAD Neo-Zionists-dominated New World Order of thousands upon thousands of tribes with flags....

The urgency of the hour for Israel can be seen in the open display of Jewish/Israeli political muscle-flexing in Washington. The normally invisible Israeli hand around America’s throat has been clearly visible lately, as America moved to take four specific actions on Israel’s behalf which will probably prove to be harmful to America’s interests, forcing a major expansion of the war on terror.

Beginning with House and Senate actions, quickly followed by Olmert’s restraint of Condoleezza Rice at the UN, then the hurried signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), our government has been very busy lately representing the state of Israel, in direct opposition to the will of the American people (judging by anti-Israel vs. pro-Israel protests).

The two congressional resolutions (H. Res. 34 and S. RES. 10) were watered-down versions of the prior chicken-hearted attempt, intended to show support for the coming MOU. Their main purpose was to put both houses on record in unanimous support of Israel’s butchery of Gaza, endorsing the lie that this conflict was started by Hamas rockets breaking a working truce and that Iran was responsible for those rockets.

“Whereas Hamas has increased the range and payload of its rockets, reportedly with support from Iran.”

The MOU is a eleventh hour end run, stealthily enacting enforcement measures upon Iran that were in the original “Iran War Resolution” but the cowardly Democrat sponsors were afraid to challenge the people with.

Secretary Rice signed the articles of surrender Friday and the Israeli. The MOU, its weight, added to that of two very similar congressional resolutions will allegedly bind Obama’s hands to continuing the failed policies of Bush and Olmert, including supporting the anticipated strike against Iran. The Israeli lobby and its Jewish-American supporters have really done their homework on this one.

The principle planners of the terror war have really done their homework as well, negotiating preparatory arms agreements and military alliances, but, more importantly, the requisite preparatory brainwashing (thanks to the Western media). They have studied the goyim mind very well, testing our reactions periodically with their previous accidentally-planned wars. They really believed that this time, they could roll over us, forcing us to contribute the weapons and the manpower to enforce Israeli mandates upon the region.

Our only hope is that public anger over the rising situation multiplies faster than the unfolding military/diplomatic scenario, allowing democratic forces to corral the forces of global dictatorship. This means that if there is ever to be a public uprising, it will have to be now. But we all know that nothing like that will occur, at least not until Americans start to suffer from our government’s misdeeds.

We will see the scenario unfold slowly in some areas and more rapidly in others. The Israeli war on the human race will continue to snowball until it overtakes the real targets, Hezbollah and Iran. Israel couldn’t defeat Hezbollah without the American Air Force, which Bush denied them until now. Israel cannot hope to take-on Iran without both our Air Force and our Navy.

The Navy is key to this new plot to force Iran into taking steps which the US/British media can portray as aggression or acts of terrorism. The Navy will create the embargoes and blockades to target Iran as the supplier of Hamas arms and technical know-how (clear acts of war), intended to cause confrontations at sea, which Iran’s small navy will surely lose. Using the same old tired but trustworthy formula for starting wars perfected by Obama’s guru, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the national bureau of war-starting (CIA2/MOSSAD) is trying to bait Iran, just like they baited Saddam Hussein into the Kuwait War in 1990.....

The Israel-US Memorandum of Understanding signed by the commander-in-chief’s hit-woman (like the resolutions produced by AIPAC’s henchmen in Congress) makes its case based on the outright distortion of truth that the conflict was precipitated by homemade Qassam rocket fire breaking the truce and not by the Nov. 4 IDF invasion of the Gaza Strip, which left six Palestinians dead. The MOU tries to portray the rape of Gaza as an act of “self-defense,” in order to justify what comes next, the creation of an international force to eradicate terrorist smuggling, or more precisely, the alliance to start a war with Iran and to reinforce Israeli positions.

“[T]o prevent the supply of arms and related materiel to terrorist organizations that threaten either party, with a particular focus on the supply of arms, related materiel and explosives into Gaza to Hamas and other terrorist organizations.”

[The document mentions unspecified actions to limit this arms traffic, specifically naming] the Mediterranean, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea and eastern Africa, [under command of] relevant components of the U.S. Government, such as U.S. Central Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Special Operations Command.

“ . . . international and coalition naval forces and other appropriate entities to address weapons supply to Gaza

“ . . . through an international response to those states, such as Iran, who are determined to be sources of weapons and explosives supply to Gaza.

“ . . . [and to] recommend additional measures to advance the goals of this Memorandum of Understanding.”

Obama’s statements in support of Israeli “self-defense” and his coterie of Zionist advisors and cabinet picks clearly indicate which direction he will go in the next few days. It looks as though Israel is choosing to play the “reasonable” card, based on an Israeli unilateral “ceasefire,” implementing the MOU recommendations. If this cessation of hostilities is real then it indicates that Israel is getting everything it wants in the still secret provisions of the memorandum. This must mean the full approval on all the next generation fighters and the requested bunker-busters that Israel wanted, along with international peacekeeping forces to police Gaza and then the West Bank, as well as a contract hit on Iran.

Here we have a new president coming into office in the middle of an ongoing CIA/Mossad psyop, which is targeted on him, while he is surrounded by a sea of Israel-serving advisors, immersed in a building world war, which is itself, the biggest CIA op of all time . . .

The man is screwed before he even starts.... Kind of.... sounds like JFK and the Bay of Pigs, doesn’t it?

Obama and his handlers are setting the stage to continue the “Bush doctrine” and to escalate the violence, especially the war on Pakistan. The lure of this appeal is that the reasoning of the Bush doctrine does accurately describe our enemies in this war, the terrorist aggressors who are bombing and murdering their way towards a corrupt world government, but it lies about who that enemy really is. The gang of international killers whom we refer to as “al Qaida” is the biggest threat to security and dreams of world peace, but the address of that adversary is not some cave in the Hindu Kush; it is at Langley and Tel Aviv.

If, from day one, Obama is intent on maintaining the charade of the Bush/Cheney “war on terror” scam (the neocon plan to restructure the Middle East in Israel’s favor through war), which has brought about its own defeat, then he is stepping into the role of primary enemy of the human race and must be opposed accordingly.

If the US can’t remove the deadly Israeli parasite from its government, then it will die. If Obama cannot separate us from the Bushwar, then he enters office doomed to failure. He must carry-out a clean break with the policies of Bush.

Israel is no doubt encouraged by Obama’s recent naïve remarks about bin Laden remaining the “number one threat” to US security.

Obama, “I think that we have to so weaken his infrastructure that, whether he is technically alive or not, he is so pinned down that he cannot function. My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him. But if we have so tightened the noose that he’s in a cave somewhere and can’t even communicate with his operatives, then we will meet our goal of protecting America.”

If our new Mossad/CIA president doesn’t realize that bin Laden is dead and that al Qaida is the CIA2/MOSSAD Nexus of evils..., then he will be no better than Bush....

We always knew that al qaeda is linked to intelligence agencies, ever
notice that never caught Ossama Bin Laden.

This quote from my Executive summary sums it up....

8. Building on the findings of the Commission and Lebanese investigations to date and on the basis of the material and documentary evidence collected, and the leads pursued until now, there is converging evidence pointing at both Lebanese and Syrian involvement in this terrorist act. It is a well known fact that Syrian Military Intelligence had a pervasive presence in Lebanon at the least until the withdrawal of the Syrian forces pursuant to resolution 1559. The former senior security officials of Lebanon were their appointees. Given the infiltration of Lebanese institutions and society by the Syrian and Lebanese intelligence services working in tandem, it would be difficult to envisage a scenario whereby such a complex assassination plot could have been carried out without their knowledge....and CIA/MOSSAD...

Water, Energy and the coming Wars .....

Boutros-Ghali's warning may have been prophetic, for water is reshaping the political landscape of the contemporary Middle East

Water, Energy and the coming Wars .....

In 1991, while still Egyptian Foreign Minister, former United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali cautioned that the next war in the Middle East could be over water. Boutros-Ghali’s warning may have been prophetic, for water is reshaping the political landscape of the contemporary Middle East.

This is no overstatement. According to a survey conducted by the World Bank in 1996, water availability in the Middle East was deemed to be the worst in the world, a mere fraction of Asian and African levels. These conditions have only worsened, as lingering drought conditions, population growth and resource mis-management have eroded regional resources.

The impact on Middle Eastern nations is ruinous. Syria’s deepening water woes, for example, already substantially affect that country’s main source of revenue, its agricultural sector, and have forced Damascus to enact restrictive water rationing measures. In spite of this, Syria’s water situation is expected to worsen, since at its current rate of growth the Syrian population is expected to double the country’s demand for water in less than two decades. Jordan faces a similar situation. Fed only by underground sources and the Jordan River, Amman is experiencing an escalating water deficit – one expected to reach 250 million cubic meters, nearly 1/3rd of current annual consumption, by the end of the decade. Even Israel, which has long viewed water as a cardinal element of its national security, faces hydrological crisis. Expanding demand, domestic mismanagement and mounting international commitments have stretched the country’s National Water System to its limit, leading officials to warn of an imminent catastrophe.

Not surprisingly, however, the region’s turbulent power politics have impeded any sort of consensus over these dwindling resources. The vast majority of regional agreements, constructed as bilateral diplomatic ententes, fail to address the rights of neighboring countries or the growing needs brought about by social and environmental changes. Those that do, only do so abstractly or implicitly. As a result, hydro-politics now looms large in the strategic calculations of countries in the region, and has emerged as a distinct element of Mideast national security and foreign policy planning.

For Turkey, water represents one of the most important, though least explored, items on the country’s contemporary security agenda. Geographically situated on the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and enjoying substantial annual rainfall, Turkey is far and away the region’s dominant hydrological power. This position has inextricably linked water to several important elements of Ankara’s Mideast policy – its troubled relationship with Damascus, the problem of Kurdish terrorism, and the evolving strategic relationship with Israel.

The Iraq-Syria equation

Water has been the primary source of tension between Ankara and Damascus since the late 1970s, when commencement of the ambitious Southeast Anatolia development project (the Guneydogu Anadolu Projesi, or GAP) shifted the balance of the power equation among Turkey and her neighbors. Through its extensive manipulation of the Euphrates, GAP has provided Turkey with broad control over regional resources, making it capable of influencing Syrian, as well as Iraqi, water supplies. Despite repeated efforts to allay Syrian concerns (most notably a 1987 Protocol in which Ankara committed to ensuring an average flow of 500cm/sec from the Euphrates), progress on GAP has increasingly underscored Syria’s susceptibility to Turkish water control. The clearest example of this occurred in January of 1990, when Turkey’s temporary diversion of the Euphrates for agricultural purposes left Syria almost wholly without water.

This vulnerability prompted a number of notable developments in Syrian foreign policy. Militarily, Damascus assumed the role of chief broker for the radical Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), using it as a proxy through which to disrupt and destabilize Turkey’s Anatolia region. The overt linkage between the group’s guerrilla activities and the water issue was underscored in the 1987 Protocol, under which Damascus pledged to curb its support for the PKK in return for Turkish water guarantees. But despite this commitment – and the PKK’s subsequent relocation to Lebanon’s Bek’aa valley – Syria remained an active sponsor of the terrorist group throughout the 1990s, using its activities as a tool to impede Turkey’s hydrological development. Syria’s sponsorship of the organization finally fomented a major crisis in October 1998, when the Turkish parliament issued an ultimatum to Damascus, calling for it to curb its support for terrorism or “face the consequences.” Under this intense pressure, the Assad regime capitulated, signing the so-called Adana memorandum and forswearing support for the PKK.

Continued perceptions of vulnerability also prompted Damascus to initiate a series of diplomatic measures aimed at diminishing Turkish hydrological power. In 1996, Syria made an unsuccessful diplomatic bid to acquire Turkish water as a precondition for negotiations with Israel. Damascus repeated this move in the year 2000 round of Israeli-Syrian negotiations; in a bold but failed overture, the Assad regime proposed to compensate Israel with Turkish water for any loss of resources from the Golan Heights – a move that would have simultaneously lessened Turkish power and bound Ankara to Israeli-Syrian agreements.

Finally, water has served as a central factor behind Syria’s deepening strategic coordination with its historic rival, Iraq. In a dramatic break from their longstanding regional competition, in 1990 the two Ba’athist regimes signed the Agreement on the Sharing of the Euphrates, which was primarily intended to counter their common vulnerability to Turkish water control. Since then, despite a temporary rift during the early 1990s (the result of Syria’s participation in the U.S.-led Gulf War coalition), Damascus and Baghdad have grown consistently closer in joint opposition to Turkish water power. In February 2000, common concern over Ankara led the two countries to reestablish formal diplomatic ties for the first time in over a decade. And since the ascension of Bashar Assad to the Syrian presidency in July of 2000, movements toward reconciliation have accelerated, evidenced by a spate of high-level diplomatic contacts and Iraqi visits to Damascus.

For Damascus, this tilt is the logical end result of a series of unsuccessful measures designed to dislodge Turkish control over the Euphrates. Baghdad, for its part, has embraced the idea of a strategic alignment directed against Turkey’s superior hydrological position in the region. With water from the Tigris and Euphrates representing some 95-98 percent of Iraqi industrial/agricultural needs (and close to 85 percent of domestic consumption), the Iraqi government is both acutely aware of Ankara’s hold on its domestic water situation and eager to eliminate Turkey’s leverage.

Both countries are now in the process of making this goal a reality. Since late 2001, Syria and Iraq have commenced joint diplomatic efforts to reopen long-dormant discussions with Turkey regarding the water equation between the three countries. And they appear to be succeeding. Over the past year, in response to mounting diplomatic pressure, the Turkish government has qualified its longstanding policy of sovereign hydrological control and indicated a willingness to reopen long-dormant discussions with Syria and Iraq over the water equation among the three countries.

The Turkish-Israeli entente

Water has also emerged as central element in the evolving strategic dialogue between Ankara and Jerusalem. For Israel, control over water has long been a cardinal security concern, contributing to the outbreak of the 1967 Six Day War and playing a major role in the country’s decision to establish a security zone in Southern Lebanon in the early 1980s. Its importance to the country’s national security doctrine was clearly articulated by the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture’s 1990 declaration that “it is difficult to conceive of any political solution consistent with Israel’s survival that does not involve complete continued Israeli control of… water and sewage systems.”

Not surprisingly, therefore, hydrological cooperation quickly emerged as an important element of the Jewish State’s dialogue with Turkey following the initiation of political contacts in the mid-1990s. In July of 1999, as part of the growing political warmth between Ankara and Jerusalem, then-Turkish President Süleyman Demirel made a landmark offer to supply Israel with water from the Manavgat River. The subsequent memorandum signed between the two countries codified Turkey’s commitment to provide Israel with 50 million cubic meters of water – equivalent to 2.5% of Israel’s annual water requirements – per year.

Nevertheless, a final accord on water cooperation remained elusive. Israeli fears of dependence on extraneous water sources, and Jerusalem’s serious misreading of the significance attached by Ankara to the water issue, served to stall hydrological negotiations between the two countries, with dramatic results. Over a six-month time period in 2000, Israel lost upwards of $5 billion in defense contracts with Turkey – including tenders for advanced attack helicopters and a lucrative $1 billion tank modernization and upgrade program – in a clear manifestation of Turkish displeasure over the stalled hydrological talks between the two countries. As late as the fall of 2001, Israeli delays were prompting Turkish officials to threaten the suspension of additional weapons projects between the two countries.

Since then, Ankara and Jerusalem appear to have reached a tentative accord on the water issue. In October 2002, the two countries formally concluded a 20-year agreement under which Israel committed to purchasing from Turkey 50 million cubic meters of water annually. Nevertheless, implementation of the agreement is still pending, as the two countries remain divided on both the price of the water and its means of delivery.

The Challenge for Turkish Policy

For Turkey, the water issue is thus one of both crisis and opportunity. The tactical alliance becoming visible between Damascus and Baghdad is, quite clearly, a challenge to Turkey’s hydrological position in the region, as is Syria’s continued involvement with the PKK, now known as KADEK. The level of real commitment in Damascus to the 1998 Adana memorandum is a matter of open debate in Turkish national security circles, and officials in Ankara cannot, therefore, rule out the possibility that some future array of circumstances (such as additional GAP development or a further deterioration of Syria’s internal hydrological situation) might again make the extremist group an instrument that Syria would attempt to use to blunt Turkish water power.

Turkey’s future relations with Israel are also likely to be profoundly defined by the water issue. As Turkish officials make clear, hydrological cooperation is seen in Ankara as a test of Israel’s reciprocity in the larger strategic relationship between the two countries. As such, Turkey will continue to look upon the water issue as a barometer of Jerusalem’s commitment to strategic ties. Recent movements toward a durable hydrological relationship are undoubtedly a positive development. However, should this relationship flounder or be handled improperly by the Israeli government, the resulting discord could have a chilling effect on the overall tenor of the Turkish-Israeli strategic dialogue. Conversely, lasting accord on the water issue, and Jerusalem’s recognition of the strategic value placed by Ankara on hydrological cooperation, is likely to spur a revitalization of ties.

In fact, such an agreement could open new vistas for strategic cooperation between Israel and Turkey. Since extensive regional water planning requires commerce and technology stretching across borders, it also requires a political-military structure capable of ensuring its safety and security – a traditional alliance able to deter hostile regimes. Clearly, the Turkish-Israeli strategic entente fits this bill, and an expansion of the strategic dialogue between the two countries could create a defensive shield for regional resources.

This type of alignment, in turn, could lay the groundwork for further regional water development. Lebanon, for example, has the capacity to become a significant regional water producer. With some nine billion cubic meters of rainfall annually, large surface water supplies and additional resources from the Hasbani, Litani and Orontes rivers, Lebanon could potentially be harnessed to meet regional needs. What’s more, Lebanese officials have intimated that they are both willing and able to have their country serve as a regional water source. A pro-Western pivot, one capable of loosening Damascus’ grip over Beirut, could eventually allow Lebanon to regain its independence and develop into such a role.

Above all, in a region where water is rapidly becoming a strategic imperative, an alliance capable of guarding against hostile diplomacy or “water grabs” remains a prerequisite for meaningful cooperation. Such a grouping could serve as a framework for regional water security – one that, over time, might be expanded to include Jordan and other emerging pro-Western states as well.

Furthermore, with the proper political will, and the backing of the United States, such a grouping could bring real hydrological and political change to the region.

Who's Goliath Now?

The usual historical reference to what is happening in Gaza is the
Holocaust. Most Jews resent Israel being compared to Nazis, but there
are other historical parallels that are more difficult to dismiss.

Twelve hundred years before Christ, The Israelites were warring with the
Philistines. At one point during a deadlock, a giant Philistine named
Goliath called for one Israelite to face him. No soldier volunteered but
David, a shepherd boy, felled Goliath with a stone from his slingshot
and cut off his head.

It turns out that the land occupied by the Philistines was the modern
Gaza strip, north to beyond Ashdod in Israel. And in an ironic reversal,
the Philistines' descendants now play the role of David.

Since the end of the second world war the United States has consistently
backed the wrong party in the Middle East: Iraq against Iran, the
Taliban against the Russians, and Israel against the Palestinians.
American (as opposed to European) politicians have insisted for decades
that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is irrelevant to other Middle East
issues. Our mistake may stem from an unconscious racism inspired by
irrational Israeli attitudes toward their fellow Semites.

Recently I learned why Israeli anti-Zionists consider the state of
Israel as illegitimate: it's because the very notion of a Jewish state
conflicts with scripture. Genesis implies that the earth from which
Adam was formed was not taken from one place, but from various parts of
the globe. Thus human dignity is not limited to one region, and human
worth has nothing to do with appearance. Since Adam is the common
ancestor of all mankind, the idea of a purely Jewish state is a
rebellion against God. The definition of a Jew as anyone who has a
Jewish mother or converted to Judaism in conformity with Jewish
religious law excludes racism. Moses married a Midianite woman who
became Jewish. And Ruth from whom David, the greatest Jewish King, is
descended, came from the Moabites, traditional enemies of the Jews.

Anti-Zionists consider that the Jewish nation was not created by
Zionists, but was born on Mount Sinai when the Jews adopted the Torah by
saying "let us do and let us hear," and God answered: "This day you
become a people."

Political Zionism was a reaction to the anti-Semitism embodied in the
Dreyfus affair at the turn of the twentieth century. Its founder first
proposed to resettle the Jews in Uganda; then he thought they should
convert to Catholicism. Finally he hit on the idea of a Judenstaat, an
exclusive Jewish state. Both Zionists and Anti-Semites believe all Jews
should be confined in one place.

The Israeli state symbol, the menorah or candelabrum declares "not with
armed force and not with power, but in My spirit." Anti-Zionists affirm
that the Zionist state is the modern "golden calf", where sovereignty
replaced Judaism's lofty ideals, rendering the divine covenant with the
Jewish people null and void. Religious obligations became a private
matter rather than a duty, with divine law subject to the standards of
conduct and ethics set by party and parliament.

Like the founder of political Zionism, Israel's early prime ministers
were non-believers, their claim to the Holy Land based on a Bible which
they considered to be mere folklore. Anti-Zionists accuse Israel's
leaders of ignoring the fact that the Jewish people were exiled by God,
destined to return only at the coming of the Messiah.

In fact, the birth of Israel came about as an invasion authorized by the
international community, represented by the United Nations. But the
Israelis have refused to abide by subsequent United Nations resolutions
that it must renounce land conquered in the 1967 war.

Anti-Zionists stress that violence is not a Jewish tradition or value.
The Jewish people were chosen, not to set an example of military
superiority, but to seek perfection in moral behavior and spiritual
purity. How different is that from Mohammed's determination that his
people submit to the will of Allah that they adopt high moral standards?
For that matter, how different is Hamas "terrorism" from that of early
Israeli settlers?

Hamas, the twenty-first century David, embodies the same socialist
principles of service to the people that inspired the Holocaust
survivors to colonize Palestine. From the beginning Zionism had a
military arm called Irgun, which fought to wrest Palestine from British
occupation so that every Jew could enter the Holy Land. Some of Irgun's
better-known attacks were the bombing of the King David Hotel in
Jerusalem on 22 July 1946, and the Deir Yassin massacre of Palestinians
(together with the Stern Gang) on April 9, 1948.

To finance its activities, Irgun extorted money from Zionist businessmen
and ran bogus robbery scams in the local diamond industry that enabled
victims to recoup their losses from insurance companies. Irgun was
described as a terrorist organization by The New York Times, The Times
of London, the BBC, and prominent world and Jewish figures. In 1946, the
World Zionist Congress strongly condemned "the shedding of innocent
blood as a means of political warfare".

From 1942 to 1948, Irgun was led by Menachem Begin, and notwithstanding
this general opprobrium, it was a predecessor to the Likud party. As
Likud Prime Minister, Begin made peace with Egypt in 1979.

In the late 1980s, during the First Intifada, Israeli governments
encouraged the emergence of the Palestinian religious movement, Hamas,
hoping to weaken the entrenched secular movement, Fatah, led by Yasser
Arafat. Like the United States in its dealings with communist movements
across the world, the Israelis discounted the socialist tradition of
building schools and hospitals and insisting on clean administration
(implemented by the Cuban revolution and eventually emulated in Latin
America). Yet these policies made Hamas the strongest Palestinian
political party, just as it was with the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The modern Goliath is threatened by two Davids, one on its northern and
one on its southern border. Though there were no journalists to report
it, the story of the original David lived down through the ages.
Today's Goliath does all it can to prevent witnesses from reporting its
war with the two Davids, but it too will become history.

The US Army Document That Proves the US is the World’s Number One Sponsor of World Terrorism

The US Army Document That Proves

the US is the World’s

Number One Sponsor of World Terrorism...

-The Cheney Vice Presidency and the White House Murder Inc,-

In a ‘manual’ which is officially to be released only to ’students from foreign countries on a case-by-case basis only’, the US Army outlines a program of what it now calls ‘irregular warfare’, in fact US state sponsored terrorism, insurgency, and PSYOPS.

http://www.wikileaks.org/leak/us-fm3-05-130.pdf

1-21. Waging protracted IW depends on building global capability and capacity. IW will not be won by the United States alone but rather through combined efforts with multinational partners. Combined IW (Irregular Warfare, euphemism for TERRORISM) will require the joint force to establish a long-term sustained presence in numerous countries to build partner capability and capacity. This capability and capacity extends U.S. operational reach, multiplies forces available, and provides increased options for defeating adversaries. The constituent activities of IW are:

  • Insurgency.
  • COIN.
  • UW.
  • Terrorism
  • CT.
  • FID.
  • Stability, security, transition, and reconstruction (SSTR) operations.
  • Strategic communication (SC).
  • PSYOP.
  • Civil-military operations (CMO).
  • Information operations (IO).
  • Intelligence and counterintelligence (CI) activities.
  • Transnational criminal activities, including narco-trafficking, illicit arms dealing, and illegal financial transactions that support or sustain IW.
  • Law enforcement activities focused on countering irregular adversaries.

1-22. The above list of operations and activities can be conducted within IW;

–Headquarters, Department of the Army, Army Special Operations Forces Unconventional Warfare, September 2008

The US Army document, cited above, is an arrogant, imperialistic and ill-considered response to a growing ‘threat’ –but a threat that is posed only to US monopolists and death merchants, i.e., the Military/Industrial Complex, a fancy name for Murder, Inc. The US has, in fact, squandered the limitless goodwill that had been extended our nation at the end of World War II.

The US has failed to make positive use of the world support for allied efforts to codify war crimes, to hold Nazi War Criminals responsibility for heinous crimes. But now –we have a recent US military document that the US Army would prefer to keep secret no doubt because it reveals to the world that those principles espoused at Nuremberg are either no longer operative or they were a fraud, the US didn’t really mean it. Or perhaps they forgot to tell the world that the laws applied to everyone but themselves.

The Army has now revealed to the world that no nation is safe from US terrorism, US attack, US subversion of indigenous cultures and governments, US bullying or the US use of WMD against them. That is because the US believes itself to be a world-wide empire, in fact, a single nation that presumes to rule the world.

The Cheney Vice Presidency and the White House Murder Inc,

As his many nicknames (Backseat, Big Time, Angler, Dark Side, Darth Vader and Deadly Dick) suggest, Dick Cheney has not only been the most influential vice president in history but also an intimidating adversary within the Bush administration and an unyielding advocate of using "any means at our disposal" in the war on terror.

In "Angler," his forceful new study of Cheney's tenure in office, the Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman writes that "the vice president shifted America's course more than any terrorist could have done," that while Al Qaida took a terrible toll on 9/11, "decisions made in the White House, in response, had incomparably greater impact on American interests and society."

"Cheney freed Bush to fight the 'war on terror' as he saw fit, driven by a shared belief that the government had to shake off old habits of self-restraint," Gellman writes. "With Bush's consent, Cheney unleashed foreign intelligence agencies to spy at home. He gave them legal cover to conduct what he called 'robust interrogation' of captured enemies, using calculated cruelty to break their will. At Cheney's initiative, the United States stripped terror suspects of long-established rights under domestic and international law, building a new legal edifice under exclusive White House ownership."

At the height of his power, Gellman says, the vice president "made big things happen": He "reshaped national security law, expanded the prerogatives of the executive branch, midwifed the birth of domestic espionage, rewrote the president's tax bill," shut down negotiations with North Korea and played a major role in bringing war to Iraq. Gellman also argues that Cheney, in trying to face down opposition from within the Justice Department, would "come close" to leading the Bush presidency "off a cliff."

"Angler" grew out of a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of the same title that Gellman and Jo Becker (now of The New York Times) reported for The Washington Post in 2007, and this book remains heavily indebted to those articles. For that matter, this volume builds upon the pioneering work of many other reporters (most notably, Seymour Hersh and Jane Mayer of The New Yorker, James Risen and Eric Lichtblau of The New York Times, and Bob Woodward of The Washington Post), whom Gellman mentions only glancingly, if at all, or in cursory notes at the end.

This book draws a familiar portrait of the vice president as a steamrolling force for the war in Iraq and enhanced executive power; as a vigilant presidential filter who framed issues and information for "the Decider;" and as a shrewd, secretive operative who used his years of government service (as President Gerald Ford's chief of staff and the first President Bush's secretary of defense) to hone his skills at bureaucratic in-fighting. What "Angler" does most impressively is flesh out this portrait with new details to give the reader a visceral understanding of just how Cheney maneuvered within the administration, frequently circumventing traditional policymaking channels and sidestepping potential dissenters to get what he wanted.

The book begins with the suggestion that Cheney, as head of Bush's vice presidential search committee, maneuvered his way onto the ticket, failing to fill out the grueling questionnaire he had prepared for other possible candidates and evading close scrutiny of his medical history. In addition, Gellman observes that "Bush - who put so much stock in his instinct for people, that knack for decoding a handshake or the quality of a gaze - did not interview a single candidate before he settled on Cheney."

During the Florida recount imbroglio, Cheney led the transition effort and set about putting the Reagan-era slogan "personnel is policy" into action, seeding the government-to-be with lots of allies, including Donald H. Rumsfeld, his longtime friend, at Defense, and Stephen J. Hadley as deputy national security adviser. Gellman points out that Cheney's own staff (most notably, David S. Addington as his legal counsel and I. Lewis Libby as his chief of staff and national security adviser) possessed "far more experience and force of will than their counterparts on Bush's staff."

In Gellman's view the vice president's sense of mission "drove him to seek power without limit" and his indifference to public opinion "verged on contempt." Given President Bush's well-known distaste for details and long policy debates, the vice president stepped into the vacuum, setting himself up as a kind of gatekeeper to the Oval Office. Gellman observes that Cheney guided the president away from his own inclinations on matters ranging from caps on carbon dioxide emissions to tax cuts for the richest Americans and a cut in capital gains taxes.

"Unlike any vice president before him," Gellman says, Cheney reviewed the president's daily CIA briefing before Bush, often suggesting "that the agency expand on an item and draw it to the president's attention" or cuing Bush's attention himself during the president's briefing.

In pushing for policies they felt strongly about, Gellman says, Cheney and Addington brooked little dissent and did their best to game the system. "They were geniuses at this," Jack Goldsmith, former head of the Office of Legal Counsel, is quoted as saying. "They could divide up all these problems in the bureaucracy, ask different people to decide things in their lanes, control the facts they gave them, and then put the answers together to get the result they want."

Goldsmith, who would withdraw several key Justice Department opinions concerning coercive interrogation and who questioned the White House's efforts to sideline the judiciary and Congress in its assertions of presidential prerogative, was witness to the March 2004 hospital face-off, in which Alberto R. Gonzales, then White House counsel, and Andrew Card, then White House chief of staff, rushed to the sickbed of the ailing attorney general, John Ashcroft, in an effort to get him to approve an extension of a secret surveillance program and were rebuffed by Ashcroft.

Gellman also provides a compelling narrative of subsequent meetings that Deputy Attorney General James Comey and the FBI director, Robert S. Mueller III, had with the president over his signing of a directive rejecting the attorney general's ruling on the law. Both men, along with "at least the top five layers at Justice," Gellman says, would have resigned had Bush, who seems not to have been informed by his advisers of the seriousness of the rebellion, not quickly reversed himself. Because "Bush did not walk off the cliff," and a Saturday Night Massacre-like situation did not ensue, Gellman says, "and because so much of the story stayed quiet, an extraordinary moment in presidential history passed unrecognized."

After this incident, Gellman writes, Bush seems to have recognized that he "could not operate as Cheney did, doctrinally unbending come what may." During his second term the president "began to trust more in his own instincts" and also gave more of a hearing to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who had frequently been at odds with Cheney and his hard-liners.

Gellman gives Dick Armey, the former Republican House majority leader, some of the last words in this book. "I do not believe that history is going to be very kind to this president," says Armey, who feels he was most likely misled by his old friend Cheney in the walk-up to the Iraq war. "I think that most of the time history is about a presidency, and a president. And the vice president is almost always a footnote in that story. But I believe that in this case the history is going to treat both the president and vice president unkindly almost in equal part."especially considering their reincarnation of the infamous White House Murder Inc, with Assef Shawkat ( آصف شوكت‎ ) (born 1950) is a Syrian assassin, and head of the Syrian Military Intelligence apparatus since 2005, rewarding him for the successfull assassinations of Mr. Elie HOBEIKA and Rafic Hariri. Israel's Sacred Terrorism: A Study Based on Moshe Sharett's Personal Diary and Other Documents

Israel's Sacred Terrorism: A Study Based on Moshe Sharett's Personal Diary and Other Documents

Most Israelis observe a conspiracy of silence by which certain subjects widely discussed in the Hebrew press are seldom aired in English-language media. One Israeli who dared to break that code of silence, however, is the late Livia Rokach, daughter of Israel Rokach, Minister of the Interior in the government of Moshe Sharett.

Sharett, a moderate who was Israel's first foreign minister and second prime minister, kept a diary in which he meticulously recorded his frustration at the determination of Israel's first prime minister, David Ben Gurion, to achieve his goals by force, and at the "immense capacity for plotting and intrigue-making of Moshe Dayan," Ben Gurion's political protegé. Much of the diary concerns the 1954-55 period during which Ben Gurion had yielded the premiership to Sharett, but still sought to set Israeli policy, first from his retreat at Kibbutz Sdeh Boker, and subsequently as Defense Minister under Sharett. Throughout this time, Ben Gurion carried out a policy he described as "retaliation," but which Sharett saw as one of regular provocations designed to bring about a new war in which Israel could seize more territory from the Arabs in Gaza, the West Bank, Sinai, Syria and Lebanon.

Avneri: "Rokach Did Clean Work"

Sharett's diary was edited by his son and published in Hebrew only. When Ms. Rokach translated excerpts from it to insert into her book about this crucial period and its tragic results, the Israeli Foreign Ministry threatened her publisher, the Association of Arab American University Graduates, with legal action if they published it without the permission of Sharett's son. The AAUG went ahead with publication and, in the words of Israeli Knesset member Uri Avneri, "the Jerusalem politicians decided that pursuing a legal course in stopping the dissemination of the booklet would be a mistake of the first order, since this would give it much more publicity."

We have the word of Avneri, whose vocal opposition to Israeli war policies in the 70's and 80's in many ways parallels the silent opposition of Sharett in the 50's and 60's, that "Livia Rokach did clean work. All her quotations are real. She did not ever take them out of context, nor did she quote them in a way that contradicts the intention of the diary writer."

Through 1954 entries in Sharett's diary we watch the planting of seeds that led to Lebanon's bloody civil war and to the creation under renegade Major Saad Haddad of an Israeli-controlled Maronite enclave along Israel's northern border. Sharett attributes the idea to Ben Gurion:

"This is the time, he (Ben Gurion) said, to push Lebanon, that is, the Maronites in that country, to proclaim a Christian State..."

The tactics, Sharett writes, were Dayan's:

"According to him (Dayan), the only thing that's necessary is to find an officer, even just a major. We should either win his heart or buy him with money, to make him agree to declare himself the savior of the Maronite population. Then the Israeli army will enter Lebanon, will occupy the necessary territory, and will create a Christian regime which will ally itself with Israel. The territory from the Litani southward will be totally annexed to Israel..."

We see secret raids in 1955 into Arab territory:

"Ben Gurion reported to the cabinet ... how our four youngsters (Israeli paratrooper reservists) captured the Beduin boys one by one, how they took them to the wadi, how they knifed them to death one after the other... When I arrived in Tel Aviv an officer... came to tell me that the whole revenge operation was organized with the active help of Arik Sharon, the commander of the paratroopers battalion."

The Story of the Lavon Affair

The diary records the Lavon affair, in which Israeli provocateurs exploded bombs in U.S. cultural centers and diplomatic establishments in Cairo and Alexandria in 1954 after being told "to break the West's confidence in the existing (Nasser) regime... The actions should cause arrests, demonstrations and expressions of revenge. The Israeli origins should be totally covered."

When the provocateurs—young Egyptian-born Jews trained in Israel and returned to their homeland—were caught and tried, Sharett publicly denied Israeli complicity and accused the Egyptians of "vicious hostility to... the Jewish people."

In private, however, Sharett deplored "the unleashing of the basest instincts of hate and revenge... I walk around ... horror-stricken and lost, completely helpless... What should I do?"

What Sharett should have done is now tragically clear. As Israeli Prime Minister, had he stood up in the Knesset and denounced Israel's actions aimed at provoking another Arab-Israeli war, the bloodshed of 1956, 1967, 1970, 1973 and 1982 might have been averted, and the greatest bloodletting of all—the Lebanese civil war—almost certainly would not have occurred.

He did not, and today we see an Israel where Ariel Sharon impatiently awaits his call to direct the next chapter in a tragic history—perhaps a Masada for the Jews, or an Armageddon for us all.

Masters In Distortion Of The Truth...

The media coverage of the war in Gaza by Western television
companies is largely unfair and biased because of a refusal to
show viewers the real images of the victims.

One of the reasons for this is Israel’s decision not to allow the
Western media in to Gaza.

In addition to this outrageous censorship by a so-called democracy, we
get the usual arguments that most of the images shown by the Arab media
are too shocking to show the viewing public in the West.

Admittedly, the horrific clip sent to me of a child’s head lying
detached, among debris in Gaza did make me gasp.

But this is war and this is real and if the Western media did show these
sort of images may be the general public would wake up to the full
horrors of what happens when bombs are dropped on civilian populat ions.

The re is no such reticence in the Arab media which is why more people
with satellites are switching on to television from the Middle East to
watch the unfolding genocide in Gaza.

And one rising media star is the fledgling Press TV, broadcast from
Iran, and recently introduced to the Sky platform 515. It is fast
becoming the first station of choice for the viewing public - especially
the english-speaking across Europe - who simply want the truth, no
matter who shocking or unpalatable it may be.

There are around half a dozen Palestinian journalists on the ground with
Press TV crews revealing the full horrors of the war as it unfolds. I am
amazed by their dedication and courage and I salute each and every one
of them ... some are my personal friends.

Yes, I do present a show for the station, but I have also worked as a
journalist for more than three decades covering conflicts and their
aftermaths from The Falklands, first and second Gulf wars, the Irish
Troubles, as well as Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq for a variety of
print and electronic media.

And one thing common in each conflict is the constant battle by
journalists and war correspondents to get to the truth of the matter,
but the battle to tell the truth is becoming more and more difficult
despite the amazing technology now available.

People in powerful places who do terrible things do not want the truth
to get out, which is why journalists are finding themselves banned20or
censored more and more.

You see the truth is a very strong and influential weapon which can be
used against those people.

Sadly when it is twisted and manipulated it can wreak even more havoc.

The Israeli war machine is masterful in its complete distortion of the
truth which is why the state continues to go unpunished for its failure
to adhere to the Geneva convention concerning the collective punishment
of the citizens of Gaza.

Israeli tacti cs are cruel, malicious and demonstrate that its leaders
are not interested in the peace process or a Palestinian State.

They are creating the ideal breeding ground for extremism, sabotaging
peace efforts and squandering the good will they have been given.

Five years ago, the Bush administration lied about weapons of mass
destruction ... it was a lie eagerly repeated by former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair to fool the media into supporting an illegal,
immoral invasion of Iraq.

And it worked.

To their eternal shame, most of the western media fell in line and
swallowed the lie - with the exception of a few journalists most have
kept quiet about this collective cock up. The New York Times did issue a
front page apology later, but the damage had been done and public
perception was difficult to change.

Sadly, many of the same news organisations and the same journalists have
learned nothing from that shameful period. At the beginning of this war,
Israel trotted out only the flimsy excuse of the Hamas rockets as
justification for unleashing its brand of Shock and Awe in Gaza.

Hamas rockets have killed just over 20 Israelis since 2001 whereas
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 700 including more than 200
children in the last 13 days. The seriously maimed and injured is
running in to thousands as I write.

But the ‘Hamas rocket’ excuse went unchallenged in the West, although to
its full credit the Israeli media revealed days later that Operation
Cast Lead wa s a long-planned campaign six months in the making aimed at
crushing democratically elected Hamas.

Yes, I admit the rockets do exist but they are nothing more than metal
barrels of junk fuelled by fertiliser. As one colleague remarked they’re
mere slingshots compared to the shells, million dollar missiles and
bunker-busting bombs used by Israel.

Some argue the Qassam rockets are used out of desperation, I personally
think they’re more of a two-fingered gesture from a people who have
suffered a brutal, medieval siege at the hands of Israel for years.

Despite its amazing war machine, and its state-of-the-art-technology
these little rockets rarely show up on any military radars. The Israelis
don’t know about them until they9 9ve landed and that’s what hacks them off.

Yet Israeli leaders and their supporters continue to present absurd
propaganda about Hamas rockets which are far less sophisticated than
anything the IRA ever used in mainland Britain during the height of The
Troubles. Mind you, the IRA was funded and backed by US dollars whereas
the Hamas military wing has no such generous donors.

I don’t recall the British Government ordering cruise missiles to be
launched on Belfast in retaliation for the misery and suffering of IRA
bombing campaigns in London, Manchester, Birmingham and other places. I
can’t ever recall Apache Attack Helicopters hover ing outside the Sinn
Fein offices in the Falls Road or targetted assassinations of IRA leaders.

Most journalists with an ounce of investigation skills would realise
that the Hamas Rocket excuse is a sham.

But it continues to be used as an excuse for unleashing what has been
described by various people, including Jewish peace activists, as a
holocaust and genocide.
Millions across the world have demonstrated - anger and anarchy on the
streets has been witness across all continents but the only ones who
look away are the Western leaders and the servile media.

The gaggle of belly-dancing Middle Eastern leaders are largely a
disgrace and are about as much use as the increasingly toothless United
Nations, but there is a backlash coming and it’s coming from ordinary
citizens across the world.

People power, the sort of power which inspired the Iranian and Cuban
revolutions, the toppling of brutal dictators like Romania’s Nicolae
Ceausescu and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, is emerging.

The Western media can either catch up with the agenda instead of trying
to follow the Zionist agenda by continuing to peddle big lies. The
viewing piblic have largely lost trust in the mainstream media,
especially in the wake of Iraq.

Quite simply, the public has become cynical and jaded and can not be
lied to any more. if the mainstream media is to regain any credibility
journalists need to challenge israeli and Western leaders.

The truth is a powerful weapon and it is true that...

ISRAEL targets civilians - more than two thirds of the dead are women
and children. So why allow Tzipi Livni to say: “Gaza Strip being
controlled by Hamas, and the price is being paid by Israeli children and
Palestinian children, but the blame is and the address is Hamas.” This
is a clear lie. What Israeli children have been killed? The only dead
children are in Gaza.

HAMAS is a political organisation which has a military wing and not the
other way around. It was democratically elected by the people who were
sick of the previous corrupt politicians who let them down.

ISRAEL broke the ceasefire on November 4 2008 - a fact finally
acknowledged on CNN nearly two months later in a discussion show
although the BBC, Fox and other western media have yet to mention this.

HAMAS does not use civilians as human shields - again, where is the
evidence? Israel needs to put up or shut up, but the media never demands
to see the evidence.
ISRAEL says it cares about civilians and warns them in advance of the
bombing raids in their area - well so did the IRA but I don’t remember
anyone congratulating them on their humanitarian actions.

And beware of the latest lie about to hit the media about Hamas
commander Mahmoud Zahar who, according to the Zionist propaganda said
Jewish children across the world are targets. A guest columnist in The
Guardian quoted Zahar as saying: “The Zionists have legitimised the
killing of their children by killing our children. They have legitimised
the killing of their people all over the world by killing our people."

This is not what he said. Unfortunately the Arabic translation was
incorrect and those who should know better have failed to check the
original speech against the transcript.

The damage has now been done and it remains to see if an apology or
correction will follow.

As Sir Winston Churchill said: “A lie is halfway round the world before
the truth has a chance to get its boots on.”

Another War, Another Defeat

The Gaza offensive has succeeded in punishing the Palestinians but not
in making Israel more secure.

John J. Mearsheimer

January 26, 2009 Issue

http://www.amconmag.com/article/2009/jan/26/00006/

Israelis and their American supporters claim that Israel learned its
lessons well from the disastrous 2006 Lebanon war and has devised a
winning strategy for the present war against Hamas. Of course, when a
ceasefire comes, Israel will declare victory. Dont believe it. Israel
has foolishly started another war it cannot win.

The campaign in Gaza is said to have two objectives: 1) to put an end
to the rockets and mortars that Palestinians have been firing into
southern Israel since it withdrew from Gaza in August 2005; 2) to
restore Israels deterrent, which was said to be diminished by the
Lebanon fiasco, by Israels withdrawal from Gaza, and by its inability
to halt Irans nuclear program.

But these are not the real goals of Operation Cast Lead. The actual
purpose is connected to Israels long-term vision of how it intends to
live with millions of Palestinians in its midst. It is part of a
broader strategic goal: the creation of a Greater Israel.
Specifically, Israels leaders remain determined to control all of what
used to be known as Mandate Palestine, which includes Gaza and the
West Bank. The Palestinians would have limited autonomy in a handful
of disconnected and economically crippled enclaves, one of which is
Gaza. Israel would control the borders around them, movement between
them, the air above and the water below them.

The key to achieving this is to inflict massive pain on the
Palestinians so that they come to accept the fact that they are a
defeated people and that Israel will be largely responsible for
controlling their future. This strategy, which was first articulated
by Zeev Jabotinsky in the 1920s and has heavily influenced Israeli
policy since 1948, is commonly referred to as the Iron Wall.

What has been happening in Gaza is fully consistent with this
strategy.

Lets begin with Israels decision to withdraw from Gaza in 2005. The
conventional wisdom is that Israel was serious about making peace with
the Palestinians and that its leaders hoped the exit from Gaza would
be a major step toward creating a viable Palestinian state. According
to the New York Times Thomas L. Friedman, Israel was giving the
Palestinians an opportunity to build a decent mini-state there a Dubai
on the Mediterranean, and if they did so, it would fundamentally
reshape the Israeli debate about whether the Palestinians can be
handed most of the West Bank.

This is pure fiction. Even before Hamas came to power, the Israelis
intended to create an open-air prison for the Palestinians in Gaza and
inflict great pain on them until they complied with Israels wishes.
Dov Weisglass, Ariel Sharons closest adviser at the time, candidly
stated that the disengagement from Gaza was aimed at halting the peace
process, not encouraging it. He described the disengagement as
formaldehyde thats necessary so that there will not be a political
process with the Palestinians. Moreover, he emphasized that the
withdrawal places the Palestinians under tremendous pressure. It
forces them into a corner where they hate to be.

Arnon Soffer, a prominent Israeli demographer who also advised Sharon,
elaborated on what that pressure would look like. When 2.5 million
people live in a closed-off Gaza, its going to be a human catastrophe.
Those people will become even bigger animals than they are today, with
the aid of an insane fundamentalist Islam. The pressure at the border
will be awful. Its going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to
remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every
day.In January 2006, five months after the Israelis pulled their
settlers out of Gaza, Hamas won a decisive victory over Fatah in the
Palestinian legislative elections. This meant trouble for Israels
strategy because Hamas was democratically elected, well organized, not
corrupt like Fatah, and unwilling to accept Israels existence. Israel
responded by ratcheting up economic pressure on the Palestinians, but
it did not work. In fact, the situation took another turn for the
worse in March 2007, when Fatah and Hamas came together to form a
national unity government. Hamass stature and political power were
growing, and Israels divide-and-conquer strategy was unraveling.

To make matters worse, the national unity government began pushing for
a long-term ceasefire. The Palestinians would end all missile attacks
on Israel if the Israelis would stop arresting and assassinating
Palestinians and end their economic stranglehold, opening the border
crossings into Gaza.

Israel rejected that offer and with American backing set out to foment
a civil war between Fatah and Hamas that would wreck the national
unity government and put Fatah in charge. The plan backfired when
Hamas drove Fatah out of Gaza, leaving Hamas in charge there and the
more pliant Fatah in control of the West Bank. Israel then tightened
the screws on the blockade around Gaza, causing even greater hardship
and suffering among the Palestinians living there.

Hamas responded by continuing to fire rockets and mortars into Israel,
while emphasizing that they still sought a long-term ceasefire,
perhaps lasting ten years or more. This was not a noble gesture on
Hamass part: they sought a ceasefire because the balance of power
heavily favored Israel. The Israelis had no interest in a ceasefire
and merely intensified the economic pressure on Gaza. But in the late
spring of 2008, pressure from Israelis living under the rocket attacks
led the government to agree to a six-month ceasefire starting on June
19. That agreement, which formally ended on Dec. 19, immediately
preceded the present war, which began on Dec. 27.

The official Israeli position blames Hamas for undermining the
ceasefire. This view is widely accepted in the United States, but it
is not true. Israeli leaders disliked the ceasefire from the start,
and Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the IDF to begin preparing
for the present war while the ceasefire was being negotiated in June
2008. Furthermore, Dan Gillerman, Israels former ambassador to the UN,
reports that Jerusalem began to prepare the propaganda campaign to
sell the present war months before the conflict began. For its part,
Hamas drastically reduced the number of missile attacks during the
first five months of the ceasefire. A total of two rockets were fired
into Israel during September and October, none by Hamas.

How did Israel behave during this same period? It continued arresting
and assassinating Palestinians on the West Bank, and it continued the
deadly blockade that was slowly strangling Gaza. Then on Nov. 4, as
Americans voted for a new president, Israel attacked a tunnel inside
Gaza and killed six Palestinians. It was the first major violation of
the ceasefire, and the Palestinians who had been careful to maintain
the ceasefire, according to Israels Intelligence and Terrorism
Information Center responded by resuming rocket attacks. The calm that
had prevailed since June vanished as Israel ratcheted up the blockade
and its attacks into Gaza and the Palestinians hurled more rockets at
Israel. It is worth noting that not a single Israeli was killed by
Palestinian missiles between Nov. 4 and the launching of the war on
Dec. 27.

As the violence increased, Hamas made clear that it had no interest in
extending the ceasefire beyond Dec. 19, which is hardly surprising,
since it had not worked as intended. In mid-December, however, Hamas
informed Israel that it was still willing to negotiate a long-term
ceasefire if it included an end to the arrests and assassinations as
well as the lifting of the blockade. But the Israelis, having used the
ceasefire to prepare for war against Hamas, rejected this overture.
The bombing of Gaza commenced eight days after the failed ceasefire
formally ended.

If Israel wanted to stop missile attacks from Gaza, it could have done
so by arranging a long-term ceasefire with Hamas. And if Israel were
genuinely interested in creating a viable Palestinian state, it could
have worked with the national unity government to implement a
meaningful ceasefire and change Hamas thinking about a two-state
solution. But Israel has a different agenda: it is determined to
employ the Iron Wall strategy to get the Palestinians in Gaza to
accept their fate as hapless subjects of a Greater Israel.

This brutal policy is clearly reflected in Israels conduct of the Gaza
War. Israel and its supporters claim that the IDF is going to great
lengths to avoid civilian casualties, in some cases taking risks that
put Israeli soldiers in jeopardy. Hardly. One reason to doubt these
claims is that Israel refuses to allow reporters into the war zone: it
does not want the world to see what its soldiers and bombs are doing
inside Gaza. At the same time, Israel has launched a massive
propaganda campaign to put a positive spin on the horror stories that
do emerge.

The best evidence, however, that Israel is deliberately seeking to
punish the broader population in Gaza is the death and destruction the
IDF has wrought on that small piece of real estate. Israel has killed
over 1,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 4,000. Over half of the
casualties are civilians, and many are children. The IDFs opening
salvo on Dec. 27 took place as children were leaving school, and one
of its primary targets that day was a large group of graduating police
cadets, who hardly qualified as terrorists. In what Ehud Barak called
an all-out war against Hamas, Israel has targeted a university,
schools, mosques, homes, apartment buildings, government offices, and
even ambulances. A senior Israeli military official, speaking on the
condition of anonymity, explained the logic behind Israels expansive
target set: There are many aspects of Hamas, and we are trying to hit
the whole spectrum, because everything is connected and everything
supports terrorism against Israel. In other words, everyone is a
terrorist and everything is a legitimate target.

Israelis tend to be blunt, and they occasionally say what they are
really doing. After the IDF killed 40 Palestinian civilians in a UN
school on Jan. 6, Haaretz reported that senior officers admit that the
IDF has been using enormous firepower. One officer explained, For us,
being cautious means being aggressive. From the minute we entered,
weve acted like were at war. That creates enormous damage on the
ground I just hope those who have fled the area of Gaza City in which
we are operating will describe the shock.

One might accept that Israel is waging a cruel, all-out war against
1.5 million Palestinian civilians, as Haaretz put it in an editorial,
but argue that it will eventually achieve its war aims and the rest of
the world will quickly forget the horrors inflicted on the people of
Gaza.

This is wishful thinking. For starters, Israel is unlikely to stop the
rocket fire for any appreciable period of time unless it agrees to
open Gazas borders and stop arresting and killing Palestinians.
Israelis talk about cutting off the supply of rockets and mortars into
Gaza, but weapons will continue to come in via secret tunnels and
ships that sneak through Israels naval blockade. It will also be
impossible to police all of the goods sent into Gaza through
legitimate channels.

Israel could try to conquer all of Gaza and lock the place down. That
would probably stop the rocket attacks if Israel deployed a large
enough force. But then the IDF would be bogged down in a costly
occupation against a deeply hostile population. They would eventually
have to leave, and the rocket fire would resume. And if Israel fails
to stop the rocket fire and keep it stopped, as seems likely, its
deterrent will be diminished, not strengthened.

More importantly, there is little reason to think that the Israelis
can beat Hamas into submission and get the Palestinians to live
quietly in a handful of Bantustans inside Greater Israel. Israel has
been humiliating, torturing, and killing Palestinians in the Occupied
Territories since 1967 and has not come close to cowing them. Indeed,
Hamas reaction to Israels brutality seems to lend credence to
Nietzsches remark that what does not kill you makes you stronger.

But even if the unexpected happens and the Palestinians cave, Israel
would still lose because it will become an apartheid state. As Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert recently said, Israel will face a South African-
style struggle if the Palestinians do not get a viable state of their
own. As soon as that happens, he argued, the state of Israel is
finished. Yet Olmert has done nothing to stop settlement expansion and
create a viable Palestinian state, relying instead on the Iron Wall
strategy to deal with the Palestinians.

There is also little chance that people around the world who follow
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will soon forget the appalling
punishment that Israel is meting out in Gaza. The destruction is just
too obvious to miss, and too many people especially in the Arab and
Islamic world care about the Palestinians fate. Moreover, discourse
about this longstanding conflict has undergone a sea change in the
West in recent years, and many of us who were once wholly sympathetic
to Israel now see that the Israelis are the victimizers and the
Palestinians are the victims. What is happening in Gaza will
accelerate that changing picture of the conflict and long be seen as a
dark stain on Israels reputation....

The bottom line is that no matter what happens on the battlefield,
Israel cannot win its war in Gaza. In fact, it is pursuing a
strategy with lots of help from its so-called friends in the
Diaspora that is placing its long-term future at risk.
